Welcome to the London Underground Historical Mapping Project
The aim of the project is to create a separate underground map for every variation* of the network over it's entire lifetime.
The map includes every line and every station that has ever been served by Transport for London (TfL), London Underground (LU), The London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) and any of the companies that came before the network was nationalised.
This site maps the progress of the project. Every so often, a new map will be produced to show progress of the project. When complete the project will include a fully interactive navigable map that will show the underground on any date from it's beginnings to the present day.
*Not including temporary closures for refitting or rebuilding.
This map shows all the stations that have ever been serviced by the underground or by one of its predecessors. Where a station has been replaced by another in the same place on the map then only the latest station is shown, even if they were in different physical locations. If two or more stations have been replaced the all previous stations are also shown. Where a station or line has changed it's name over time, only the latest name is shown.
I have taken the decision to exclude the Southend services from this project. This is because these were run by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR) using their own rolling stock, but pulled by District Railway electric locomotives from Ealing to Barking, and then by LTSR steam locomotives the rest of the way. I do not consider this to be a part of the underground. Source: London's District Railway Volume 2: Twentieth Century, M.A.C.
